Castell started with a desire to improve healthcare for everyone—payers, providers, and health systems. We believe that it takes cooperation, focus and dedication from all sides to make great change in healthcare, and we’re helping to accelerate that change.

Castell.

For more than 300 years people have built human towers – known as castells – around the Catalonia region of Spain. These towers often require more than 1000 people to build. Our name represents this same building and creating together. Together, we are more than the sum of our parts, and we use our determination, focus, and shared vision to reach our goals. As a Catalonian castell demonstrates, when everyone is aligned, great things can happen.

Castell is built on our success in managing health—specifically, a proven value-based clinical care model called Reimagined Primary Care. Originally created by Intermountain Healthcare, Reimagined Primary Care successfully implemented fee-for-value in the trial clinics. After just one year, the program produced strong results:

Nick Bassett serves as Vice President of Population Health Services for Castell, in which he defines and implements Castell’s strategy for population health and risk-based arrangements. Nick brings years of direct experience leading Intermountain Healthcare’s population health team and driving healthcare reform from within. He has played key roles in leading the development of an orthopedic bundle with the High Value Healthcare Collaborative, implementing a performance-based physician payment model, facilitating network engagement, overseeing commercial and government programs, and serving as the President for Intermountain’s Medicare ACO. Nick received a Master of Business Administration from Southern Utah University.

Chief Financial Officer

Borja Bofarull Marraco serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Castell, where he leads financial planning and analysis and partners with payer contracting and supply chain on financial aspects of contracting. In this role he also leads the development of Castell’s long-term financial strategy, including innovative approaches to the financing of health care. Borja brings a decade of experience in healthcare finance, during which he has led multiple mergers and divestitures, utilization management programs, and the valuation and selection of strategic partnerships. Prior to his role at Castell, Borja worked at DaVita, where he developed and implemented a cloud-based budgeting and performance management solution, oversaw a capital restructuring process, and was part of the leadership development program. Borja received a Master of Business Administration with distinction from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

Executive Director of Government Programs

Eric Cragun is the Executive Director of Government Programs for Castell. In his role, Eric leads Castell’s efforts to succeed in risk-based contracts with government payers. This includes guiding Castell’s strategy in Medicare and Medicaid programs, managing participation, and collaborating with operations teams to drive performance. Current programs run by Eric’s team include Global and Professional Direct Contracting, Medicare Shared Savings Program, Bundled Payments for Care Improvement – Advanced, and Idaho Medicaid Value Care Organization in addition to support for Medicare Advantage and Medicaid products operated by SelectHealth. Eric also contributes to Castell’s work advancing national and state health policy discussions.

Prior to joining Intermountain, Eric led health policy consulting for Advisory Board, serving as an advisor to executives at health systems around the country. Eric earned an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Chief Operating Officer & Medical Director of Clinical Operations

Will Daines, MD serves as the interim Chief Operating Officer for Castell, as well as the Medical Director of Clinical Operations. Dr. Daines brings extensive clinical and operational experience and has been a part of Intermountain Healthcare since 2014. Since joining Intermountain Healthcare in 2014, Dr. Daines has served in various administrative roles as medical director of Connect Care and internal medicine associate medical director; and medical director at Intermountain Medical Group. In addition to his leadership roles within Castell, he maintains an active primary care practice. After receiving his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, Dr. Daines completed an internship at the University of Utah and a residency in internal medicine at Stanford University. Following his residency, Dr. Daines worked as a hospitalist at Stanford Hospital and held academic appointments at Stanford University.

Executive Director of Operations Transformation

Mike Hancock serves as Executive Director of Operations Transformation for Castell. In this role, Mike leads the Operations Transformation and Care Traffic Control teams that support Intermountain Medical Group and Affiliate Partner Clinics. Mike has worked for Intermountain Healthcare for eight years in service line, geographic operations, and practice management roles leading a variety of outpatient clinic and hospital outpatient services.

Prior to working for Intermountain, Mike worked from three years in the ambulatory setting with HCA/Mountainstar. Mike earned both Master of Health Administration and undergraduate Health Administration degrees from Weber State University.

Dave Henriksen serves as Vice President of Clinical Operations for Castell, where he leads the company’s efforts to operationalize value-based clinical care models. Dave brings many years of experience in clinical operations at Intermountain Healthcare to this role, as well as targeted leadership in advancing Intermountain’s understanding of value-based care. He has been integral to the early successes of Intermountain’s value-based care model called Reimagined Primary Care, having led the development and implementation in clinics across the health system. Prior to Intermountain, Dave managed six outpatient surgical clinics at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon. Dave received a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota.

Maria Hill

Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Care Management for Intermountain Healthcare

Maria Hill is the Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Care Management for Intermountain Healthcare. Her primary responsibility in this role is oversight of care management functions across all divisions including Hospitals, Medical Group, and Castell. Maria has more than 30 years’ experience with corporate, academic, and community-based health systems, where she has been instrumental in the development and implementation of care management methodologies. Her work in the continuum of health care service is focused on delivering the best practice and results in value based payment arrangements including Bundled Payment, Accountable Care Organizations and Medicare Advantage Plans. She is trained as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Chronic Care. Her work in Lean Design and 6 Sigma assists her in driving excellent results in quality, cost of care and service excellence. Maria’s staff and peers appreciate her insight into their business and personal needs, which complements her technical background in Case Coordination and Care Management.

Maria earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Clinical Nursing and Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was certified as a Case Management Administrator and an IHI Quality Improvement Fellow.

Michelle James is the Executive Director of Commercial Programs for Castell. In her role, Michelle leads developing, implementing and managing value-based contracts with commercial payers. This includes guiding Castell’s strategy regionally and nationally with commercial payers and collaborating with operation teams to drive performance.

Prior to joining Intermountain, Michelle managed healthcare benefits for Fortune 50 and public employers where she was instrumental in the development and implementation of one of the value-based employer benefit programs in the U.S. She worked directly with several healthcare delivery systems to implement a healthcare collaboration coalition for value-based payment arrangements, leading Lean Design and 6 Sigma efforts to implement efficiencies in the delivery of evidence-based medicine that resulted in improved quality, patient experience, and cost reduction for the employers’ healthcare benefit programs. Michelle earned an MBA from Westminster College.

Laura McDonough serves as Executive Director of Health and Wellbeing for Castell, where she leads efforts to improve health outcomes and affordability by incorporating social, behavioral, and physical health solutions into Castell's value-based care model. For the last several years, Laura has been leading enterprise initiatives from the Intermountain Healthcare Strategy Office focused on advancing value-based care, including the development and launch of Castell. Prior to Intermountain, Laura managed a broad portfolio of clinical services at UCLA Health. She brings over a decade of experience in population health, hospital and clinic operations, health policy, and health plan operations to Castell. Laura received a Masters of Healthcare Administration from the University of Michigan.

Josh Romney, MD

Dr. Josh Romney is a primary care internist in Salt Lake City, Utah and Medical Director of Population Health for Castell. In his role, Dr. Romney advances Castell’s population health strategy including driving change in how care is payed for by government and commercial payers, as well as how those risk contracts translate into operations. He also supports Castell’s work in the areas of home-based care, clinical quality improvement, clinically integrated network performance, and physician compensation models.

Dr. Romney earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. He currently practices primary care internal medicine with Intermountain Medical Group.

Andrew Sorenson serves as the Chief Analytics Officer for Castell, where he oversees the company’s analytics strategy, analytics product development, machine learning capabilities, and strategic vendor partnerships. Andrew brings more than a decade of strategic analytics and decision support experience at Intermountain Healthcare to Castell. In his Intermountain role, he led key initiatives that enhanced the organization’s analytical capabilities, including establishing Intermountain’s population health analytics and operational data science functions. Andrew received a master’s degree in Healthcare Delivery Science from Dartmouth College.
